When my baby was born, pediatrician and hospital said babies do not need to be fed with water until 6 months. Then I had a good CL (good in cooking/clean, love babies, etc) but little did I knew that lo was fed with water when had hiccups. I immediately told CL that lo does not need water for 6 months. My mistake for not informing beforehand.
On the first week my hb came back after taking bb for jaundice test, he was mumbling and said need to feed baby with water (according to a friend or someone, I forgot what he was saying) and said SDMC paed bluff him, said no need give water for 6 months. I forgot what he was relating to, but I said it's true. BB do not need water for 6 months as I read in the article and forward the article to him. So he understood thereafter.
My aunt told me that both her grandchildren was trained by her CL to drink water. Even in their sleep after finishing one bottle of formula milk, they will automatically grabbed another bottle of water next to it (I assumed they would have been a grown up that time since can get another bottle on their own). However I do not think this is applicable to newborn as babies have small tummy and drinking a bottle of water may cause 'water intoxication'.
As my lo hiccup-ed quite often (even in tummy), my mum has been hinting to me to give him some water to stop the hiccup and when weather is hot to give him some water to drench the thirst despite knowing that I would object furiously but she was trying her luck. (I fully bf lo already that time). Eventually I think she googled up the info herself (yes she does that alot) and did not bring up this again until after 6 months. Haha...
I was once a new mother whom lack of info and was half hearted whether to follow ped's advice or the elderly. I choose the real expert instead of self expert.
Another reason and believe from the elderly (or even younger mom), if you do not train early aka from birth, they will not drink water later.
If you would have accessed to these info in advance, would you still give lo below 6months water? It's up to individual really as this is not a law. Afterall, everyone strive to give their child the best.... in different ways.
